The Youth in Arts Italian Street Painting Festival in San Rafael, CA, showcases some of the world’s top street painters, or madonnari, as well as the outstanding talents of local San Francisco Bay Area artists who have taken up this unique art form. This year the festival dates are June 12th & 13th.
Artists range from internationally recognized masters to talented youth from local schools. The form is truly performance art, with visitors able to see paintings created in front of their eyes, from the first mark on the asphalt to the final stroke of color. Participating in the Festival is a wonderful way for artists to share their work and their inspiration with the estimated 60,000 visitors who come through the free event each summer.
Proceeds from the Festival support Youth in Arts’ year-round educational programs for preK-12 students and special needs children and young adults.
The Art:
Each year at the Festival, hundreds of Madonnari (street painters) transform San Rafael’s streets into a dazzling chalk art gallery. Our featured artists create some of the largest works at the event, developing their work around the Festival theme for the year, with this year's theme being 'Bella Terra'. International featured artists travel from around the world to contribute their unique perspectives to the event. And hundreds of participating festival artists create paintings in a range of sizes, representing a myriad of artistic interpretations.
Featured Work: The Four Elements:
Four Featured Artists – Sharyn Namnath, Amy Gallaher, David “Two Hawks” Glazier and Mark Cummings – will collaborate this year on a major collaborative work representing the four elements of nature: earth, air, fire and water. Come to the heart of the Festival, near 5th and A to see this large-scale piece created right before your eyes!
International Featured Artsists:
The international featured artsists this year will be Bruno Fabriani (Italy), Omar Sáenz Hinojosa (Mexico), and Jesús Alberto Carrizal Esquival (Mexico).
For his 'Bella Terra' featured square, Bruno Fabriani will portray his love of the Italian land from the point of view of someone who has grown up on it and loves it.
Omar Sáenz Hinojosa and Jesús Alberto Carrizal Esquival will street paint at Youth in Arts Italian Street Painting Festival as winners of Festival Bella Via 2009, a competitive street painting event in Monterrey, Mexico. Omar received first place in the ‘Free Theme’ category at Festival Bella Via. Jesús received first place in the ‘Renaissance’ category at Festival Bella Via.
Festival Artists:
There will be more than 100 street painting artists at the Youth in Arts Italian Street Painting Festival this year! If you live in the San Francisco area, please come out and support their talent and effort!
