Art is Good at the Saint Louis Art Fair
New artists and attractions make Good Times at this year’s event
Saint Louis residents are about to experience that Art is Good in downtown Clayton. The Saint Louis Art Fair is already a favorite end of summer tradition for art enthusiasts and new comers who want to experience art in a welcoming and fun setting. And, this year’s event will offer even more to see and enjoy.
What’s New in 2011?:
•Street Painting – Teams from 10 area high schools will compete in this year’s “Walking On Art” chalk drawing challenge. This competition was inspired by 16th Century Italian Madonnari masters who made a living drawing with chalk once they finished their paintings within cathedrals. The local teams can re-create an existing masterpiece or create one of their own. They’ll get the chance to learn from four current chalk art “masters” who are being brought in -- including Cape Girardeau’s acclaimed Craig Thomas, Lee Jones and Jackie Coyne Kovach from Florida, and 3D artist Anthony Cappetto from New York City. Three winning teams will receive $100, $250 and $500 worth of new art supplies for their schools, thanks to a grant from the PNC Foundation.
•Ice sculpting – Chefs from L’Ecole Academy for Culinary Development will chip their artistic visions into a giant block of ice; it’s a first-time event for the Saint Louis Art Fair.
•Commemorative Print – This year’s honorary work is an intriguing yet mysterious painting entitled “Journey” by New Mexico artist Jodi Perry.
While there are plenty of new attractions to see at the 2011 Saint Louis Art Fair, everyone’s favorites are returning, offering something for the entire family:
