Art for After Hours is pleased and honored to present
‘Liberty Tree’ a 3D illusionary design by internationally recognized 3D 4D
Chalk Artist Anthony Cappetto and the team of Wendy Stum and new team member Holland
Waters Winslow.
In the spirit of the historic theme of the Liberty Tree in
which the famous quotation by Thomas Jefferson stated:
“The tree of liberty
must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
We intend to ignore the tyrants completely. We strive to honor and respect our patriots
fully and completely in this artwork which will measure 15 by 30 feet in size.
Upon completion of our piece, we invite those who have are
serving, have served, or those who have loved ones who gave their lives for
this country to chalk their names on the leaves of the Liberty Tree.
When we run out of leaves, people can write those names at
the base of the artwork as well.

Hi Everyone from Anthony and Wendy at Blog Now on streetpainting.tv. The word 'Grazie' in the street painting art community means an annual event (street painting art competition) held annually in August, drawing the best artists in the street painting world to create beautiful art at the Sanctuary during the Feast of the Assumption. We are happy and honored to share some historical background offered to us by Bishop Egidio Caporello on the Grazie International Street Painting Competition, the oldest modern street painting competition held each year in Grazie, Italy as well as a series of new events for readers to look forward to this year. Here are some notes from the Bishop for our readers. Enjoy.
History
The story of
street-painting in Grazie starts in 1973, when Gilberto Boschesi, researcher of
folk costumes and traditions, decided to give recognition and value to the art of
Madonnari, who had always been present at the fair of Grazie, individually and
spontaneously.
Madonnaro Straccetto (above): An inspiration to Madonnari, and street painters worldwide. He is missed and remembered by all.
On August
15, 1973, for the first time public authorities and associations called
together in the courtyard of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin the so-called
"Pavement painters". On that occasion a group of journalists and art
critics, such as Enzo Tortora, gave them a more appropriate title that of
"Madonnari", as the folk tradition called painters and peddlers of
sacred images. That title suited with their characteristic painting popular sacred
images of Christian inspiration, with simple colored chalks, predominantly on
the pavement of the church squares and sanctuaries during religious feasts,
fairs and festivals. The meeting and the pictorial competition, which determine
who can claim the title of "Master Madonnaro" and offer the winner
for one year, the trophy of Madonnaro, takes place every year on August 15, the
feast of the Assumption, in the context of the ancient Fair which has been held
in the same place since the foundation of the Sanctuary (1399).
The event was
recognized by the President of the Italian Republic and by the President of the
Region Lombardy. The Ministry of Culture was interested in it in order to
safeguard an expression of folk art in danger of extinction. At the beginning,
few Madonnari attended the competition, but over the years, they reached over
200 and among them there were many foreigners: Europeans, Americans, and
Japanese. There is a significant presence of women. The event, which over the
years has become an international art festival, was publicized by the national
and international press and documented by Italian television networks, by the
"Associated Press", by "National Geographic" and by “ABC
". In August it becomes a most unique outdoor laboratory.
This is a
display of skill and creativity vanishing after a few days or even a few hours,
when the rain falls; it is an example of ephemeral art that can be fixed only
through the camera lens. The fair attracts in Grazie every year from one
hundred to two hundred thousand people in 2 or 3 days. The festival begins on
the night of August 14th, when, after the blessing of the chalk by the Bishop
of Mantua, artists begin to paint and ends August 15 in the evening, with the
jury's verdict.
The Madonnari
were organized in association with the official name of AMI: Madonnaris’
Italian Association. Later on, they formed many other groups under various
names. Now the CIM: Italian Centre of Madonnari has the task of saving the
correspondence, the pictures and other material documenting the history, besides
all, files with the names of competitors over the years, and also some
significant chalk works for various periods to compare the evolution of
"manners" to paint, the various masters who have come and gone over
time, leaving evidence of an ancient but always present art, which is a
spontaneous expression of figurative aesthetic of immediate emotions.
Madonnaro Bruno Fabriani (left) displaying his artwork with Bishop Egidio Caporello (right).
A key
moment in the history of madonnari was the apostolic visit of Pope John Paul II
in 1991. On that occasion, eight artists, among them the great Kurt Wenner,
painted an oversized Last Judgment of Michelangelo, 81 square meters of art, to
welcome the Pope, who signed it with his own autograph using a white chalk. Now
the asphalt fragment with the Pope’s authentic signature is preserved in the
Sanctuary.
The Papal Signature on display
'The Last Judgement' as a welcome for Pope John Paul II in 1991.
In May
2011, twenty years after that extraordinary event, the Madonnari were invited
to paint a religious subject on the courtyard and it was a masterpiece.
Nowadays
Picking up
a widespread and instinctive idea to give continuity to a similar experience, a
few months ago, I launched the proposal not to limit the presence of madonnari
to the competition in August, but to extend it to the whole year.
Consequently,
in respect of the Year of Faith, proclaimed by the Pope Benedict XVI, together
with local authorities, we decided to organize a series of events:
1. An
exhibition of cribs and Nativities for Christmas,
2. An
exhibition of paintings, sculptures and chalk panels for Easter on the theme
“Crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ”,
3. an
exhibition in May with the whole village decorated with paintings and flowers,
4. the
traditional competition in August.
In December
we were really surprised by the solidarity of artists (madonnari, painters and
sculptors) and by the enthusiasm of the local population who accepted our
proposal with joy and emotion. The free service of volunteers gave a precious
contribution to the success of the initiative. Developing the experience of this
exhibition, we are thinking of Easter and hope to achieve the same result as
Christmas.
Grazie is a
very nice little village of about 600 inhabitants, on the lake of Mantua. The
most important monument and centre of it is the catholic Sanctuary dedicated to
the Virgin Mary with its large square and its fascinating artistic elements
(statues, chapels, votive symbols, etc.).
The
Madonnari who come here from all over the world breathe the atmosphere pervading
this enchanting place. Here, everything is religion and only religious subjects
can be painted, nothing else. The Madonnari are perfectly
conscious of this peculiarity. While painting, they won’t be
disturbed because they’re praying. Here painting becomes a form of prayer. It
is a deep, high, absolute, joyful prayer.

We are particularly happy to see the return of one of our favorite street painting festivals, albeit in a new form - The festival is now Italian Street Painting Marin, scheduled for June 29th and 30th, 2013, led by Festival Director Sue Carlomagno! As a historical note, it is at the former Youth in Arts Italian Street Painting Festival in which I street painted for the very first time in 2001, and we see where that has led as a street painting artist! Again very happy to see these developments and hope to be sharing more about the Festival with our readers during 2013!

Festival Bella Via:
...Street painting at the top of the mountain the challenge of opening a new cultural space, can be said that it was a challenge to overcome. Street painting between the Sun and the clouds, framed by the Sierra Madre, the Cerro de las Mitras, the Cerro del Topo and our flagship Cerro de la Silla. It has been a unique experience, and perhaps even repeatable.
This experience, Festival Bella Via, reaffirms as a cultural gesture, and socially strengthens as a formative activity, and service vocation to the citizen.
During the two days of the realization, we were visited by around 20,000 spectators, who came to live the already traditional ephemeral art of the FBV. To the beating of drums, and our flag (Mexico) hoisted, the soil of the Esplanade from the viewpoint of the bishopric, was covered with art centenary art madonnari...

Happy New Year 2012 from Blog Now on streetpainting.tv!!!
That being said, now on to where Blog Now will be going this year in 2012...
Wendy and I wish to apologize to our readers for being quiet during the last part of 2011. We admit that we have been very involved with a series of street painting art projects with our other company, Art for After Hours which has kept us particulary busy. While we were in the midst of these activities, we gave serious thought as to how we wanted to make Blog Now even better and more engaging than we have had before. And this is what we are thinking...
Starting this week, Blog Now on streetpainting.tv is moving to posting daily with posts, discussion, and thoughts about street painting art, festivals, and observed developments which we see as our way of sharing our appreciation and attention relevant to a blog such as ours that is "..for artists, festivals, and fans..."
Watch very soon for Blog Nows posting on the winners at the Festival Bella Via 2011, but also short posts about the many artists who created work for the festival who are the backbone of such exciting international street painting art competitions such as this.
There will also be similar coverage short posts from events that we have attended in Saarasota, FL as well as events coming up this year in the USA, Mexico, and Europe through local reporters on the scene, and of course our level, journalistic coverage of festival directors and industry professionals in all locations.
Pictured above: We noticed this street painting at the Sarasota Chalk Festival and we recalled the life of Toto de Angelis (Straccetto) who left us in 2011. His experience as a Madonnaro in the true sense is an inspiration to every one of us who all who street paint, chalk, screeve anywhere in the world today.
Have a very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year from Wendy and I at Blog Now on streetpainting.tv.
Hi Blog Now on streetpainting.tv readers...I know many of you have been looking forward to the news about the Grazie International Street Painting competition that took place this past weekend in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy. We are sharing the following article from the Gazzetta di Mantova, the local newspaper.
Opere segnalate dalla giuria: Antonio Cristalli, Christine Jessen, Aldo Biazzi, Sonia Acerbi, Achille Tinelli, Ilaria Fastosi, Sara Ferrari, Valentina Zanini, Valeria Corti, Antonio Cammarano, Omar Oriente, Haruisa Hando.
Hello from Blog Now on streetpainting.tv, we are happy to report that Lorelle Miller, a well known street painting artist has had a busy Spring sharing her street painting art in the USA and is currently sharing her art abroad in Norway.
Lorelle has just completed participating in the 25th Anniversary of the I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival as an invited Guest Artist. The street painting - a reproduction of 'Joseph's Dream' was completed in three days time. The artwork measured eight by eight feet in size and it should be noted that Lorelle 'free handed' or drew the art without creating a gridded sketch of the work. This shows a high level of talent and command of figurative drawing.
The original piece is by Gaetano Gandolfi (ca. 1750), and she was sponsored by St. Mary's Seminary.
The I Madonnari festival is directed by Kathy Koury from the very beginning 25 years ago, and is considered the festival that brought the street painting art form to the United States. Many street painting festivals and street painting artists have been inspired by this important festival.
Norway
Currently Lorelle is particpating in an international street painting exhibition and educational program in Hamar, Norway. The exhibit, 'Art Exchange Between Continents' will be at the Gustavas Culture Factory from June 10, 2011 through June 24, 2011. She will be recreating a Masterwork made by a Norwegian national. Ms. Miller's host, Hilde Gustava, a multi-talented artist and instructor from Hamar, Norway. The Gustava Culture Factory offers educational classes in art, acting, sculpture, and stage directing.
Blog Now on streetpainting.tv is looking forward to sharing the fine work of Lorelle Miller with our readers created during her exhibition in Norway.

Hello to all of our regular readers and a Happy New Year 2011!
2011 is going to be a time of growing in the world of street painting art with newer festivals become part of the street painting landscape along with a new generation of street painting artists making their mark on the scene.
Blog Now on streetpainting.tv is happy to be reaching out to festival directors, street painting artists, and the growing fan base around the world discovering our 400 year old plus art form in the world of new media and technologies in a partnership - not a competition - with the live viewing experience one can only have by attending a street painting festival in your area, wherever that might be.
As streetpainting.tv, Wendy and I have been so glad to be part of street painting to interview many artists over the years in Monterrey, Mexico at Festival Bella Via and making new friends in street painting at the Sarasota Chalk Festival last October. We are working on interview videos with artists from Monterrey and Sarasota and plan to have even more videos up and running on the websites and online sources of streetpainting.tv. We can be seen on our streetpainting.tv branded site/channels on YouTube, Facebook Fan Page,Twitter, Livestream and plan to spread into the fabric of social networking and mobility to bring street painting art to as many as possible in the ways that work best for our growing base of viewers with a library closing in on 300 videos and counting.
We are supportive of all the new festivals arising in Europe, around the rest of the world, and across the USA. Streetpainting.tv will be happy to bring our unique one on one interviewing (thanks to Wendy) to any interested festivals anywhere who will be glad to have us on the media team.
Of course, we have not forgotten the festivals that have brought street painting to popularity before the advent of our current internet age such as the festivals of California, such as the I Madonnari in Santa Barbara, and the Italian Street Painting Festival by Youth in Arts in San Rafael and the many others in the USA such as the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival in Florida, the Via Colori Festivals, and the many others across the country.
And then there is Italy, where the art of the Madonnari began, the home of the Competition at Grazie which brought Madonnari together from 1972 after it was thought the art form may have begun to fade away. The importance and tradition of the Italian festivals and the longtime Madonnari is clear and in our respect, a special thanks to our fellow street painters from Italy who bring material for posts to us during the year.
Thanks to all, especially our readers for being a part of our blog and video channel in 2010 and we hope to bring as much street painting to you as we can in 2011.
